Getting There
Overview
A classification for your materials (Setup→Materials).
Benefits
Properly categorizing your materials provides the following:
- Makes materials easier to search, as you can type in the category a material to see all materials in that category.
- Finer-grained inventory counts and snapshots: you can perform an inventory-count or snapshot for one or more specific categories of materials.
- Reporting: some reports allow you to filter based on the category of material.
- Streamlining some production tasks by marking a category as an ingredient category. This means when selecting ingredients for your recipes or tank additions, you will only see materials in categories marked as ingredients.
- Set a default tax for when purchasing materials in that category. This makes it easier to remember which taxes to apply when setting up a purchase order.
- If Brew Ninja is connected to your accounting system, you can link a material category to a specific asset general ledger (GL). e.g., This allows you to use a different GL for Hops than for Malt.

Special Category Values
The following category values have specific uses in the system:
Default | The fallback category; materials that do not have a category assigned to them will be assumed to belong to this category. |
Packaging | When creating product SKUs and selecting packaging materials, only materials with this category will be visible. |
Filtering | When transferring tank contents, there is the option to enter the amount of filtration media consumed. Only materials with the Filtering category will be available to select at this point. |
